How to Store Wine: The Basics to Proper Wine Storage
How to properly store opened wine bottles is almost as important as how you serve the wine. Wine Terms & Lingo: How to Describe Wine Like a Pro
Have you ever listened to two wine enthusiasts talk about their favorite wines? If so, there was probably some wine terminology being thrown around that would go over most peoples’ heads. Wine can be, for some, an intimidating item to order as its flavors and textures can be quite complex, and if you’re a patron in a wine bar and you aren’t sure what questions to ask or how to find the words to describe wine you enjoy, then you might not feel very comfortable ordering a glass in a hip wine bar. Willamette Valley Pinot Noir: A Guide to the Region's Success In Wine
Only 40 years ago, if you were looking for luxury wine, especially of the Pinot Noir varietal, the only place to look in the United States was California’s Napa Valley. Otherwise, consumers could only turn to France or Italy to find high end options. Thanks to a few pioneers that knew potential when they saw it, winemakers began harvesting across Oregon and by the 1980s turned this Pacific Northwest region into the centerpiece for Pinot Noir. Panther Creek in 2012 Oregon Pinot Noir Retrospective | Washington Wine Blog
What was considered by most to be a hallmark vintage, 2012 in Oregon was the calm which came after the storm of the cold and challenging 2011 vintage. Talking with winemaker Tony Rynders, he mentioned how these wines needed a bit of time to fully evolve into something special. I noticed that when I tried these upon release, that many of the 2012 Oregon Pinot Noirs were quite reticent both with their aromas and flavors. The wines had the stuffing and potential, but many just needed time to evolve. Continue »

Pinot Noir with Copper River Salmon - Part 2 Little Tidbits about Pinot Noir Pinot Noir is a hard grape to grow, and it is a hard wine to make well. Panther Creek in 2011 Oregon Pinot Noir Retrospective | Washington Wine Blog
Initially panned as a poor vintage, many wine critics, including myself, were downright incorrect in reviewing the 2011 vintage. What is now in the glass is typically something more linear, earthy and in its best edition, thoroughly intoxicating. It is clear that many of these wines were not ready upon release and needed time to develop in the bottle. I think that 2011 as a vintage, like 2007, is particularly challenging to rate, due to the range of quality in the wines. Originally upon release I saw this vintage as better than most Oregon wine reviewers, rating it 88, as I noted good and even great wines made upon release as well as some lean, bordering watery wines, particularly with some of the value Pinot Noirs that struggled with gaining adequate concentration. I have re-rated this vintage 90 as there are far more wines that are near or exceed 90 points. In fact, I tried a very high concentration of wine that I rated over 90 points. Continue »

Panther Creek De Ponte Vineyard Pinot Noir, Wine of the Week | Wines Northwest
Wines of the Week Published June 21, 2017 Pinot Noir and Copper River Salmon Part 1 of a 4-Part Series By Chuck Hill For many wine lovers, Pinot Noir is their red of choice – offering ripe and fruity aromas and flavors, as well as the most versatility in pairing with food. Whether serving roasted chicken, meats from the grill, or pasta with a hearty sauce, Pinot Noir enhances the flavor of the food and adds character without overpowering the dish. My choice of rich Copper River salmon from Alaska gives Pinot Noir a chance to mingle with a superstar of the seafood world and create a perfect match of food and wine. Continue »
"Pacific Northwest Tour" | Kalita Vineyard
I had the opportunity over a two week period to taste a wide variety of Oregon Pinot Noir vintages. First up was the Northwest Wine Encounter at the Semiahmoo Resort in Washington State just over the border from Canada. I went because Consulting Winemaker Tony Rynders was pouring the 2014 Panther Creek Cellars Kalita Vineyard Pinot Noir. Since 2013 when the Bacchus Wine Fund acquired the iconic winery founded by Ken Wright in 1986 and Tony Rynders took over the winemaking duties, the Kalita Pinot Noir has become one of the featured single vineyard wines in the Panther Creek lineup... Ken Wright Cover Story | Wine Spectator
Ken Wright made his way to Oregon in 1985 in a dilapidated pickup truck with his wife, two young sons and 10 barrels of California Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It was an unlikely beginning to a career that's helped establish the state's Willamette Valley as a homeland for Pinot Noir. But it says a lot about Ken Wright. The 61-year-old winegrower has proved to be pragmatic and persuasive. When his bank account could not finance the move to Oregon, he convinced his former employer, Talbott Vineyards, to let him take those barrels with him to sell when he started in Oregon. Though prohibited by several federal regulations, he convinced a federal agent to let him bottle and label the wines in 1986 as the debut offerings of his new winery, Panther Creek. Continue »
